Puntland Forces Rescue Tanker from Somali Pirates

Puntland Maritime Police Force has rescued the tanker Sibu 1 after Somali pirates held it for more than a month, The Maritime Telegraph reports, citing Reuters. The ship was taken on August 20 by six armed men while sailing about 136 nautical miles east of Al Mukalla, Yemen. The tanker had 20 crew members, including 16 Indian seafarers.

Puntland forces freed the tanker off Somalia’s Mudug coast, between Garacad and Hobyo, and captured the pirates. Local authorities said there was a gunfight during the operation. Three people were reportedly killed and several others injured, but these numbers have not been independently verified.

MV Sibu 1 is managed by UAE-based Qatrat Alnada Almasi Ship Management. The US sanctioned the tanker in December over its alleged role in transporting Iranian petroleum products in violation of US sanctions. The rescue comes as more ships have come under attack in waters near Somalia and the Gulf of Aden this year.
