Seaspan Corporation, a company known for containerships, is entering the dry bulk market. It has ordered two 210,000 dwt Newcastlemax ore carriers from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, The Maritime Telegraph reports, citing Lloyd's List. These will be among the first ships of this size with triple-fuel engines. They can use ethanol, methanol or heavy fuel oil. They are also LNG- and ammonia-ready.

Seaspan will own the ships. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) will charter them. MOL Ocean Bulk has a 25-year contract with Vale International to carry iron ore. Delivery is planned for 2030.

MOL says the ships will mainly carry Vale's iron ore from Brazil to destinations around the world. China is expected to be a major one. Each ship will be about 300 metres long and 50 metres wide.

For Seaspan, this is a big step beyond containerships. The company is also expanding into other segments in 2026, with orders for five very large ethane carriers, four open-hatch ships and six LNG dual-fuel car carriers. Yangzijiang already builds many containerships for Seaspan. Earlier this year, it moved to buy a 10% stake in Seaspan's parent company, Poseidon.
