CMB.TECH, a Belgian shipping company, has launched MV Mineral Europa on its maiden voyage to Australia. The 210,000-ton dry bulk carrier is the first commercial bulk carrier to operate with an ammonia dual-fuel engine already on board, according to Splash 247. Built this year in China, it marks a turning point for the shipping industry's climate ambitions.

CMB.TECH plans to operate 21 ammonia-powered ships by 2029, including bulk carriers, a container ship, and chemical tankers. Major clients are already committing to this technology. Australian mining giant Fortescue agreed to charter bulk carriers with ammonia engines, while Japanese operators Mitsui OSK Lines and MOL Chemical Tankers secured nine ammonia-fueled vessels for delivery through 2029. This demand shows the market is ready for green shipping.

The main challenge remains securing green ammonia fuel. CMB.TECH is investing in storage and bunker infrastructure while partnering with suppliers. According to CMB.TECH, green ammonia produces zero emissions during combustion, but its climate benefit depends on production methods. With MV Mineral Europa now at sea, the company moves from planning to operating ammonia-powered vessels.
