Rotterdam launches first ethanol bunkering for containerships

Eco Levant Rotterdam

The Port of Rotterdam has completed its first ethanol bunkering operation for an ocean-going ship, marking another step in the shipping industry’s transition to cleaner fuels. The containership MV Eco Levant received an ethanol-methanol fuel blend during the operation last weekend.

The news, first reported by The Maritime Telegraph, places Rotterdam among the first ports globally to test ethanol bunkering for large commercial vessels. The fuel blend included 90% ISCC EU-certified biomethanol and 10% second-generation ethanol.

The bunker barge MTS Experience, operated by Tankmatch, supplied both fuels, which were blended onboard after delivery.

Operated by X-Press Feeders, Eco Levant has continued sailing on the blended fuel since bunkering. Rotterdam, one of the world’s крупнейших bunker hubs, continues expanding its low-carbon fuel infrastructure as global shipping increases investment in alternative energy solutions.
