Costamare Expands 3,100 TEU Containership Orderbook to 10 Vessels
Greek container ship owner Costamare has expanded its newbuilding programme, increasing its series of 3,100 TEU containerships to ten vessels, The Maritime Telegraph reports. The company placed an additional order with Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard, targeting demand for mid-sized ships used in regional and feeder container trades.
The operator confirmed contracts for four additional vessels, scheduled for delivery between the fourth quarter of 2027 and the fourth quarter of 2028. Each ship has already secured medium-term charter employment starting immediately after delivery, reflecting Costamare’s strategy of linking newbuild orders with forward charter coverage.
The order follows the company’s return to the newbuilding market last year after a six-year pause. Costamare first ordered four vessels at Zhoushan Changhong and later expanded the contract to six ships. Those units are expected to be delivered between the second quarter of 2027 and the first quarter of 2028 and will begin eight-year time charter agreements once handed over.
With the latest order, the total number of 3,100 TEU ships in the series rises to ten. According to the company’s latest fleet update, Costamare currently operates 79 containerships with a combined capacity of about 551,000 TEU, including vessels under construction.
