Containers from Sunken Ship Wash Ashore in Bulgaria
Bulgarian authorities have warned ships about containers and other objects drifting in the Black Sea after the Greek-owned containership Contship Jet sank. Some objects have reached the coast, but the origin of at least one container found near Tsarevo has not been confirmed. The Maritime Executive reports.
The vessel was struck by three sea drones on October 29, about 16 nautical miles offshore, and sank around 12 hours later. It was carrying 421 containers, including hazardous cargo such as flammable liquids and gases and lithium-ion batteries. More than 20 containers reportedly fell into the sea before the ship went down.
One container reportedly carrying Christmas trees washed ashore. A separate frame holding a large tank also reached the coast. Officials suspected the tank was empty. Another container was found among the rocks near Tsarevo, but its connection to the sunken ship had not been confirmed. Rough seas have prevented recovery teams from collecting the floating objects or inspecting the wreck. Authorities hope to begin recovery work when conditions improve. They are also concerned about the fuel remaining on board.
