Ukrainian Icebreaker Noosfera Embarks on Fifth Antarctic Expedition
The Ukrainian icebreaker Noosfera has set sail from Cape Town, South Africa, marking the start of its fifth Antarctic expedition, reports The Maritime Telegraph, citing the National Antarctic Scientific Center (NASC). Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Noosfera has served as Ukraine’s vital link to the Akademik Vernadsky Station in Antarctica.
Led by Captain Andrii Starysh, the vessel will deliver scientists and technical experts to Vernadsky and later rotate the overwintering team. According to NASC, this season is expected to be one of the most ambitious yet, both in terms of scientific goals and international collaboration.
Ukrainian researchers will conduct extensive oceanographic, geological, biological, and meteorological studies. Their work will include mapping ocean currents, analyzing seafloor sediments, and monitoring whale populations through AI-based tracking systems. Meteorologists and geophysicists will continue atmospheric and ionospheric observations crucial for understanding global climate dynamics.
For the first time, Noosfera will also provide logistical support to the British Rothera Research Station, located about 300 kilometers south of Vernadsky. Ukraine’s polar team will join the First Mexican Antarctic Expedition for joint ocean and biodiversity research, alongside ongoing partnerships with Poland, the United States, the Czech Republic, and Colombia.
