Maersk Brings Wind Power to Container Shipping

Maersk plans to test wind-assisted propulsion on an 8,700-TEU containership, The Maritime Telegraph reports. The vessel will receive a large rotor sail in mid-2027 to assess whether wind-assisted propulsion can help reduce fuel use and emissions.

UK-based Anemoi Marine Technologies will design and supply the 5-metre-wide, 35-metre-high fixed rotor sail for a Maersk Lima-class containership. The vessel will continue its normal commercial operations during the trial, with expected voyages on North and South Atlantic routes.

The project will be Anemoi’s first rotor sail installation on a large containership. The vessel will initially use a single rotor sail, allowing Maersk to gain practical experience and assess whether the technology can improve efficiency in container shipping.
