The MSC Silvana VIII has partially sunk off Zhoushan, China, after salvage teams failed to refloat the vessel, The Maritime Telegraph reports.

The 20-year-old, 332-metre containership entered the Zhoushan ship repair area on June 22 after arriving from Gwangyang, South Korea. The vessel appears to have grounded when Typhoon Bavi hit Zhejiang last month.

The stern, engine room and several cargo holds have been flooded. Salvors have removed about 3,000 tonnes of fuel, but images from August 7 showed signs of fuel oil escaping from the ship.

MSC has not issued a public statement on the casualty. The cause of the grounding, the extent of the damage and the next steps in the salvage operation remain unclear.

Oil Spill Fears Grow Around Grounded Russian Crude Tanker Near Oman

A tanker carrying Russian crude oil remains stranded near Oman’s Hallaniyat Islands, increasing concerns about a possible oil spill in a protected marine area.

MV Caroline Bezengi, a 159,168 DWT vessel under Western sanctions, ran aground in June after reporting an onboard explosion during a voyage from Russia to India. Satellite images taken in July appear to show oil around the ship, though Omani authorities have not officially confirmed any pollution.
