Oil Spill Fears Grow Around Grounded Russian Crude Tanker Near Oman

A tanker carrying Russian crude oil remains stranded near Oman’s Hallaniyat Islands, increasing concerns about a possible oil spill in a protected marine area.

MV Caroline Bezengi, a 159,168 DWT vessel under Western sanctions, ran aground in June after reporting an onboard explosion during a voyage from Russia to India. Satellite images taken in July appear to show oil around the ship, though Omani authorities have not officially confirmed any pollution.

The tanker’s condition continues to deteriorate. Seawater has reportedly entered parts of the vessel, while almost all cargo tanks remain loaded with crude oil. Salvage teams are considering transferring the cargo before trying to refloat the ship, but poor weather is slowing the operation.

The vessel is located close to an important wildlife area that supports whales, sea turtles and seabirds. According to The Maritime Telegraph, a major leak could cause serious environmental damage to the local marine ecosystem and Oman’s coastline.
