Maersk Lines Up Nigeria’s Badagry Port for West Africa Expansion

APM Terminals, part of Maersk, is in talks to help develop Nigeria’s planned Badagry deepsea port. The project could become a new major container gateway for Nigeria and West Africa. APM Terminals has signed an agreement to start exclusive negotiations with the project developers, Splash 247 reports.

The planned port is located west of Lagos. It should be able to receive larger containerships than the existing terminals in Lagos. It is also expected to add new transhipment capacity in West Africa.

Nigeria approved the $2.5bn project in 2022 under a 45-year concession. The first phase is planned to handle 1.2m teu of containers per year. It will include a 740-metre quay and 18-metre water depth. The full project could eventually reach around 3.9m teu of annual container capacity.

The potential deal would also strengthen Maersk’s position in Nigeria. APM Terminals already operates the Apapa Container Terminal in Lagos and the West Africa Container Terminal in Onne. The company is also discussing possible extensions of its existing concessions.
