Libya has initiated an emergency maritime response to secure the damaged LNG carrier Arctic Metagaz, which continues drifting in the Mediterranean and poses rising environmental and navigation risks, according to NextShip. The country’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) is coordinating recovery efforts with international specialists and national authorities to stabilize the vessel and prepare it for towing to a safe port.

The 277-metre carrier has remained adrift since an explosion and fire struck the ship on March 3. Although the crew evacuated safely, the vessel sustained serious structural damage and has since moved across central Mediterranean waters, occasionally approaching areas near Malta and southern Italian islands.

Despite hull breaches, the ship has stayed afloat due to its double-hull design. However, it now sits lower in the water and shows a noticeable list, increasing operational risks.

Authorities warn the vessel still carries significant volumes of fuel onboard, while parts of its LNG cargo system may also remain intact. Weather conditions have recently pushed the carrier closer to Libyan waters, prompting officials to place offshore infrastructure on alert and advise nearby vessels to keep clear of the area.
