According to The Maritime Telegraph, a ferry crossing the Strait of Gibraltar was forced to return to port after Storm Emilia generated violent seas, causing extensive vehicle damage onboard. The ro/ro ferry Ciudad de Mahon departed Algeciras late Saturday night for Ceuta, encountering far harsher conditions than expected.

Shortly after departure, a powerful wave caused the vessel to heel sharply, lifting her propellers out of the water and forcing the master to abort the crossing. On the vehicle deck, unsecured cars collided, resulting in dozens of damaged vehicles. Passengers reported a tense scene, though no injuries occurred.

The ferry waited nearly two hours for a berth upon returning to Algeciras, with food provided onboard. The total aborted voyage lasted approximately five hours. Passenger videos showed vehicles piled at awkward angles, displaying clear signs of storm-related damage.

Ciudad de Mahon had been selected for this route due to her larger size and presumed ability to handle rough seas. However, operator Balearia confirmed that conditions near Ceuta were significantly worse than forecast, preventing a safe docking. Compensation has been offered to affected passengers.

After inspection and improved weather, the ferry resumed its regular Algeciras–Ceuta schedule by Monday, with no further investigation planned.
