Dead and Missing Crew After Tanker Strike Near Oman
A tanker strike near Oman has left one seafarer dead and several crew members missing, according to The Maritime Telegraph. The incident marks the first reported crew casualties linked to the United States’ maritime blockade targeting Iranian oil exports.
The Palau-flagged product tanker Settebello sent a distress call after suffering severe engine room damage about 20 nautical miles off Sohar, near the Strait of Hormuz. A fire broke out on board, forcing the crew to abandon the vessel.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said American forces targeted the tanker after it allegedly failed to follow instructions while transiting the Gulf of Oman. According to CENTCOM, the action was part of efforts to enforce restrictions on Iranian oil shipments.
UK Maritime Trade Operations reported one death and two missing crew members. India later said that 21 Indian seafarers had been rescued, while three Indian nationals remained unaccounted for.
The incident has raised concerns over maritime safety. India condemned the attack and called for de-escalation in the region. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) also stressed the importance of protecting seafarers and respecting international law.
The strike came amid growing tensions in the region and one day after U.S. forces disabled another tanker, Marivex, during blockade enforcement operations.
