Two Crew Members Evacuated from Heavy-Lift Ship During North Sea Storm
The heavy-lift ship UHL Freedom sent a Mayday call on October 25 during a storm in the North Sea. The vessel was about 18 miles off the Dutch coast, facing waves of around five metres. Maritime Executive reported that two crew members were evacuated.
The 150-metre ship had 25 crew members on board and was carrying materials for offshore wind farms. Heavy rolling injured the master and second officer as the vessel was raising its anchor. A Dutch rescue helicopter took both men to hospital. The master remained under treatment, while the second officer was released.
The Dutch Coast Guard reported engine problems, but the ship's owner, United Heavy Lift, denied any engine failure or machinery damage. The crew then turned the bow towards the waves, raised the anchor and continued to Emden, Germany. The vessel has since docked.
