Seafarer Killed After Bulker Is Hit in Strait of Hormuz

A seafarer was killed after the capesize bulker Cape Dao was hit while sailing through the Strait of Hormuz on September 23. The 2002-built ship, flying the Antigua and Barbuda flag, was struck off Oman’s Musandam Peninsula. The attack caused a fire in the engine room and left the vessel drifting, Splash 247 reported.

A Royal Navy of Oman vessel evacuated 27 crew members. India’s embassy in Muscat confirmed that the seafarer who died was Indian. Nineteen Indian nationals were on board. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The incident follows two other recent attacks on commercial ships in the area. The tanker LR Stephanie was hit by an unidentified projectile, injuring two crew members. The LPG carrier Al Maryah was also damaged by debris.

The IMO said last week that it had confirmed 84 attacks on merchant ships in and around the Strait of Hormuz since the conflict began.
