MV Terra Clove marks a new step for ammonia-powered shipping
Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS), owned by Idan Ofer, has named its first ammonia dual-fuel very large ammonia carrier (VLAC), Terra Clove, at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea. The 93,000 cu m vessel is expected to be delivered in November after sea trials, Splash 247 reported.
The 230-metre-long ship can carry ammonia as cargo and also use it as fuel. It is the first new commercial vessel with ammonia dual-fuel propulsion to be registered under the Singapore flag. The ship has four cargo tanks and special systems to handle ammonia safely, detect leaks and manage emissions.
The project began in June 2022, when EPS joined forces with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and classification society ABS.
During the naming ceremony, EPS also formed a strategic partnership with the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. The two organizations will work on alternative fuels, dual-fuel ships, energy efficiency and ammonia safety. Their research will also cover methane and ammonia emissions.
EPS is also expanding its ammonia carrier fleet. Earlier in 2026, the company ordered two additional 90,000 cu m VLACs from China's Jiangnan Shipyard, with delivery planned for the first half of 2028. Unlike MV Terra Clove, these ships will have LPG dual-fuel propulsion.
