MSC Enters Ukraine’s Port Sector with Landmark TIS Investment
MSC has strengthened its presence in global logistics by acquiring a controlling 51% stake in the TIS Container Terminal at the Port of Pivdennyi, Ukraine. The transaction marks a notable milestone for the country’s maritime industry, as it is the first publicly reported case of a major container carrier becoming a shareholder in a Ukrainian container terminal. The development was reported by The Maritime Telegraph.
Although the parties have not disclosed the financial terms, industry sources consider the acquisition one of the largest transport-sector deals completed in Ukraine over the past decade. The move aligns with MSC’s broader strategy of building an integrated logistics network that extends far beyond its core container shipping business. Alongside its vast fleet, the company has continued investing in terminals, inland transport, and supply-chain infrastructure worldwide.
TIS, established in 1994, has grown into Ukraine’s leading private port operator and plays a key role in handling cargo through the Port of Pivdennyi near Odesa. MSC’s arrival comes shortly after DP World exited the project by selling its stake in the terminal, opening the door for a new strategic investor.
Industry observers believe the deal sends a positive signal to international investors at a time when foreign capital remains cautious about Ukraine. Many see MSC’s decision as a vote of confidence in the long-term potential of the country’s maritime and logistics sectors, with the possibility of attracting additional investment into port infrastructure in the years ahead.
