HMM Scales Up Autonomous Navigation With Avikus Deal
HMM has reached a major agreement with Avikus, the autonomous navigation subsidiary of HD Hyundai, as reported by NextShip, signaling a shift of AI-based ship navigation into full commercial use. The contract, one of the largest in this field, focuses on rapid fleet-wide deployment rather than further trials.
The Korean carrier plans to install second-generation autonomous navigation systems on 40 vessels. In parallel, HMM, Avikus, and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering will cooperate on joint R&D, aiming to accelerate technical upgrades and future applications.
With this deal, Avikus moves beyond 100 commercial systems supplied, becoming the first provider to reach that scale in large ocean-going vessels. Installations currently rely mainly on retrofits, though wider use on newbuilds is expected as demand grows, according to Lloyd’s List.
The Avikus solution delivers Level 2 autonomy, allowing AI to manage route planning, speed optimization, and navigation control with minimal crew input. The system improves fuel efficiency and situational awareness, addressing key industry issues such as crew shortages and fatigue, a trend highlighted by Splash247.
As adoption accelerates, the industry is now focused on class approvals and IMO regulation, which will define how autonomous navigation integrates into mainstream shipping operations.
