Chinese Port State Control authorities sharply increased detentions of Panama-flagged vessels in March 2026, raising concern across the global shipping sector. Data from Tokyo MOU recorded 179 detentions in the Asia-Pacific region last month, including 123 in Chinese ports, with 91 ships under the Panama flag, an unusually large share. The trend was highlighted by NextShip.

Laura DiBella of the Federal Maritime Commission said the pattern appears to affect vessels carrying a significant share of US containerized cargo, increasing risks for trade flows and fleet deployment decisions.

Detentions involved containerships, tankers and bulk carriers, including ships operated by Chinese owners under the Panama registry. Beijing denied any connection between inspections and the port dispute. For shipping executives, the message is clear: inspection exposure in major Chinese ports now carries both compliance and geopolitical risk.
