The Swire group's involvement in the marine industry dates back 150 years, with interests covers a wide range of activities, from multipurpose liner shipping to global bulk trading, logistics, and port and shipping agency services.

Swire Shipping (formerly known as The China Navigation Company) was established by Swire in 1872 – originally to operate paddle steamers on the Chinese Mainland's Yangtze River. Headquartered in Singapore, Swire Shipping today is a leading provider of specialist customer solutions for a wide range of cargoes, enabling trade in more than 90 countries. Swire Shipping is the wholly owned shipping arm of John Swire & Sons Limited. Headquartered in Singapore, the company has offices in 17 countries and employs over 2,500 seafaring and shore personnel globally. The company owns and manages a global vessel network, offering its customers high frequency liner shipping services and specialist shipping services to energy and infrastructure sectors in the project logistics market.

In July 2021, Swire Shipping ventured into landside logistics services such as customs clearance, inland transportation services and cargo management solutions, complementing its existing liner shipping products.
